Martin Luther The Ninety-Five Theses

This eBook edition of «The Ninety-five Theses» has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Ninety-five Theses or Disputation on the Power of Indulgences are a list of propositions for an academic disputation written in 1517 by Martin Luther, professor of moral theology at the University of Wittenberg, Germany, that started the Reformation, a schism in the Catholic Church which profoundly changed Europe. They advance Luther's positions against what he saw as the abuse of the practice of clergy selling plenary indulgences, which were certificates believed to reduce the temporal punishment for sins committed by the purchasers or their loved ones in purgatory. In the Theses, Luther claimed that the repentance required by Christ in order for sins to be forgiven involves inner spiritual repentance rather than merely external sacramental confession. He argued that indulgences led Christians to avoid true repentance and sorrow for sin, believing that they could forgo it by purchasing an indulgence.

Martin Luther Selections from the Table Talk of Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483-1546) is a name that is synonymous with reformation. His 1517 posting of ninety-five theses on the door of All Saints church in Wittenburg changed the course of history forever. In his theses, Luther objects to the Roman Catholic Church and its practice of selling indulgences, as well as the idea that money could buy one's way to salvation. His controversial ideas inspired the Reformation and influenced the Lutheran and Protestant ideologies. Most of Luther's books were ordered to be burned, however, a copy of his «Table Talk» (originally titled «Divine Discourses») was found under the foundation of a German home in 1626. It contains a series of informal conversations recorded by Luther's students and colleagues in his home, and illustrates the reformist's firm beliefs on religious doctrine, history, academics and history, to name a few. These selections expound some of Martin Luther's most profound ideas, completely uncensored.

Martin Luther Disputation of Doctor Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences

Nancy A. Almodovar A Modern Ninety-Five

In 1517 an Augustinian monk by the name of Martin Luther nailed ninety-five statements to the door at Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. This was not a means of open debate but a desire to discuss scholarly objections to church practices of the time. Five centuries later, many of the same errors and heresies have crept back into the evangelical church.
A modern ninety-five theses, couched in new terms for a new generation, require scholarly debate once again. Through modern-day apostles and prophets, and through the elitists within the evangelical church, the doctrine of buying God's grace and favor has been propagated through appeals for seed offerings and «atonement-day» donations in order to garner God's blessings. Pragmatic approaches to preaching the gospel through such movements as the seeker-driven models have moved the focus of the message of Christ and the worship of God from being God-centered to human-centered. Sound historical doctrines, such as the Trinity, have been relegated to the sidelines in favor of unity and ecumenicalism with Oneness preachers.
In the words of Martin Luther, «Out of love for the truth and the desire to bring it to light,» the following propositions need to be discussed in their entirety by church leaders, pastors, and laypeople alike.

Группа авторов 95 Theses for a New Reformation

Five hundred years ago Martin Luther wrote his Ninety-Five Theses, inaugurating the Protestant Reformation, and with it exemplified an unflinching devotion to return to the Word of God as the ultimate authority. Today, the church is also in desperate need for reformation–a new reformation to correct her shortcomings and meet the challenges of the day. Some might see everything as fine, some might see everything as hopeless, and others might simply dismiss the church as irrelevant, too impotent to reform herself, much less to strengthen the disintegrating family or address the downward-spiraling culture with a prophetic voice.
95 Theses for a New Reformation confronts the necessity for reformation today head-on. Over thirty of today's pastors, theologians, and church leaders analyze ninety-five current problems, search the Scriptures for solutions, and make sound biblical appropriations to implement into the life of the church, family, and culture. On this 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, let us pray that the Lord will again revive his church for his own glory and for the purification of Christ's beloved bride, the church. And let us prepare ourselves to respond with urgency to God's call to action by reforming the church, family, and culture.

Martin Luther First Principles of the Reformation (95 Theses and Other Works)

In 1517, Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church, and ultimately altered the course of European history, when he nailed his «95 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences» on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. At the time, Renaissance humanists were beginning to oppose the reign of the Church and the wealth it accrued from taxes and the sale of Indulgences to the people. A monk and a scholar, Luther intended to promote independent thinking with the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He wanted people to read the words and understand God in terms of their own experience. Unsurprisingly, he was ordered by the pope to print a retraction, which he refused; he was ultimately excommunicated, and his action prompted the Protestant Reformation. This edition contains Martin Luther's «95 Theses», as well as the three other primary works of Martin Luther: «To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Respecting the Reformation of the Christian Estate», «Concerning Christian Liberty», and «On the Babylonish Captivity of the Church».

Grisar Hartmann Luther

Luther is a six volume biography of Martin Luther, German professor of theology and the Church reformer, famous for his Ninety-five Theses of 1517 and recognized as a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. The aim of the work was to present accurate historical and psychological portrait of Luther's personality, which is still a mystery from many points of view. While presenting Luther's psychological picture the author chooses to do so in Luther's own words, analyzing his writings and letters. Analyzing Luther's writings he opts not to write about Luther's teachings and the history of dogma, but reaches deeper in his endeavor to supply an exact portrayal of Luther as a whole, which should emphasize various aspects of his mind and character.

Martin E. Marty October 31, 1517

This new book by religion scholar Martin Marty, released in time for the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, shows how Martin Luther’s insights still speak to the church today about reconciliation, repentance and the need for «a change of heart.» Included are the 95 Theses of Martin Luther.
"The ’one thing’ that opens these pages relates to and, in fact, is the first of ninety-five theses that were proposed five hundred years ago by Martin Luther.... Here is that first thesis, as it was voiced by that influential monk in Germany half a millennium ago: "When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ’Repent’ (Matthew 4:17), he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.
So, simply put, this book is about ’repentance’ as a worthy theme for believers to keep in mind if and as they commemorate events of five hundred years ago, events that still shape many features of their lives." – Martin Marty
"Martin Marty’s attention to October 31, 1517, the day that Martin Luther promulgated his 95 Theses, provides valuable insights for the past, the present, and the future—why Luther’s articulation of ’repentance’ meant so much then, why his commitment to ’justification’ has now built a bridge for Catholics and Lutherans to work with each other, and why this great event of 500 years ago might herald a hopeful future for Christian believers and all others. There is an awful lot packed readably into this one small book." – Mark Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame
"I would not dream of preparing my mind and heart for the celebration of Luther’s role in the Reformation without finding out what Martin Marty has to say on the subject. And he says it here in this wonderful little book. The gifted historian that he is, Marty gives us much solid information. But he also writes eloquently about how best to prepare our souls for the kind of commemoration that also includes some prayers of repentance." —Richard Mouw
"This pithy book offers valuable insight on how Luther’s 95 theses have had a profound influence on the ecumenical movement, and can help Christians today understand what it means to be a member of a truly ’catholic’ church." —Kathleen Norris
"Martin Marty is the most widely respected historian of Christianity in the United States today. In this little book he with clarity, compassion, and a good dose of common sense shows how Luther’s story is meaningful today." – Rev. John O’Malley, S.J., University Professor, Georgetown University
"From one of the world’s most preeminent scholars of religion comes a book about repentance; …It is a gem."– James Martin, SJ

Martin Luther Commentary on Galatians

St. Paul’s “Epistle to the Galatians” is one of the most important of all Christian writings. The work was treasured by Martin Luther, the 15th century German priest, scholar, and father of the Protestant Reformation. For this reason, Luther delivered lectures on the “Epistle to the Galatians” in 1531 and published those lectures in 1535. The resulting “Commentary on Galatians” by Luther is widely regarded as one of the most important commentaries ever written on Christian faith and love. Deeply personal and at least in part autobiographical, Luther explains why St. Paul’s “Epistle to the Galatians” is so important and meaningful to both him and to the Christian faith. Paul’s “Epistle” and Luther’s “Commentary” have assured countless Christians of the superiority of the Bible over human reason, the perfection of Christ’s sacrifice and atonement through his death, and the essential doctrine of justification through faith alone as the foundation for all Christians. Moving and passionate, Luther expresses the strength and comfort that he has found in this faith. This masterpiece continues to remain as inspiring and important to Christians today in understanding their faith as it has been for the last five hundred years. Presented here is the condensed translation by Theodore Graebner. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Justin Nickel The Work of Faith

Many scholars assume that Luther advocates for a Christian life in which human beings are always passive recipients of God’s grace as it is delivered in preaching, and mere instruments through which God works to serve their neighbors. The Work of Faith: Divine Grace and Human Agency in Martin Luther's Preaching offers a different reading of Luther’s views on human agency by drawing on a fresh source: Luther’s preaching. Using Luther’s sermons in the Church Postil as a primary source, Justin Nickel argues that Martin Luther preached as though Christians have real, if secondary, agency in the lives they lead before God and neighbor. As a result, Nickel presents a Luther substantively concerned with how Christians lead their lives.
